Liquid damp-proof floor membranes

THE PROBLEM

Solid floors are frequently found to be damp and the presence of an effective membrane under such floors often cannot be established. it is expensive and disruptive to dig up floors: surface screeds or asphalt raise the level and cause other problems, (e.g. at doorways). Bitumens and solvent based coatings give off unpleasant vapours and may not withstand traffic, or provide a decorative surface.

In many cases solid floors are not badly cracked or hollow and could be easily repaired. However, such repairs are only worthwhile if the floors can be restored to provide a vapour proof surface suitable for immediate floor covering.

Stone and quarry type floors offer a range of problems: they rarely have any form of vapour barrier, have many joints and may be fissured or cracked.

Wall and floor to wall joints must also be considered: any product used as a membrane must be easily joined both to the damp proof course and any other existing floor and/or wall membrances.

BENEFITS

  • Saving existing solid floors
  • Eliminating moisture penetration from below ground
  • Avoiding the use of solvents which cause odour and affect health
  • Providing a hard surface which will take traffic
  • Allowing the use of man made underlays and carpets on old floors
  • Resistant to chemical attack, can be applied immediately to new or repaired surfaces
  • Lack of fire risk
  • Tools and equipment easily cleaned with soap and water
  • Ability to penetrate and cure on damp surfaces
  • Aquachem Primer may be used as a protective curing membrane on new concrete

THE SOLUTION

Apply Aquachem, a solvent free, water based two pack Epoxy Emulsion to all the surfaces.

Its unique characteristics allow the material to penetrate into many types of damp substrate, thereby providing a vapour proof epoxy barrier.

Aquachem is highly resistant to attack by ground water and other salts and is therefore particularly recommended where cement based materials would be considered at risk from sulphate, nitrate and other chemical attack.

Cracks, fissures and poorly pointed joints must be made good before coating, but the dense nature of Aquachem gives good cover and high colour build on most surfaces.

Special features

Aquachem can be used for a wide range of applications:

a) Quarry or slab floors - these usually lack a vapour proof membrane and are therefore difficult to maintain in a clean condition. Two coats of Aquachem will provide a clear or coloured semi-gloss wearing finish, which can be covered with flooring of any type.

b) Concrete floors - concrete or screeded floors can be directly coated to provide a fully sealed surface ready for immediate flooring, or as an exposed trafficable finish.

c) External walls - almost all types of building material can be coated to link into the floor membrane.

d) New and repaired surfaces - Aquachem is not affected by the initial high alkalinity of cement and concrete, or by residual dampness, so coating can proceed without delay. (With other systems minimum moisture limits may require a considerable delay).

e) Below ground levels - Aquachem is suitable as a membrane material and can be used to prevent water moving under hydrostatic pressure.

The Rotafix© Liquid Epoxy Membrane, Aquachem, is an easy to apply coating system available in a range of BS4800 colours. Also available as a clear primer/sealer and with various aggregate systems to give skid resistant surfaces and decorative effects.

Aquachem Primer is a solvent free, water based two pack Epoxy Emulsion designed to provide a base for Aquachem colour coats, or to beused as a two coat finish on above ground floors and walls, where the substrate is required to be visible through the coating. The finish has a semi-gloss, hard surface.

Aquachem Colour is a solvent free, water based two pack Epoxy Emulsion containing a dense pigment in the BS4800 range of colours. Designed to be applied as a two coat finish on smooth dense materials, or over a coat of Aquachem Primer on open textured or porous materials.

The success of using these products can only be guaranteed when they are applied by a fully trained, professional company, such as Isca Preservation.

SUMMARY OF FEATURES

  • solvent free, safer to handle and apply
  • water-based, can be applied to damp surfaces and green concrete
  • a vapour barrier, prevents moisture movement under hydrostatic pressure
  • trafficable, a floor finish in its own right
  • resistant to chemical attack, can be applied immediately to new or repaired concrete surfaces.

ROTAFIX RESEARCH

Rotafix has developed its solvent free technology over the last two decades and designed high performance vapour barrier coatings for surfaces subject to heavy industrial and commercial use. Now you can benefit from this technology by employing a fully qualified professional to replace bitumens, sheet membranes, screeds and ordinary epoxies Aquachem.
