Wet rot - Paxillus panuoides

Habitat:

Found on softwoods. It prefers very damp situations.

Damage characteristics:

Initially a vivid yellow stain appears wherever the mycelium is present. In an advanced stage the decayed wood becomes soft and cheesy, and on drying, deep longitudinal fissures and some fine cross-cracks appear.

Fungal characteristics:

Mycelium Soft, hairy or woolly, dull yellow with occasional tinges of violet.

Strands Thin, same colour as mycelium, do not darken with age.

Fruit-body Dingy-yellow, fan or funnel-shaped, no stalk. Gills are yellow and branch frequently.
